The "MaleMan"
Delivering the Male Perspective - 2/05

Just a few of thoughts about several things goin' on around the country the last couple of weeks...

First, prayers go out to the families of the 2 undercover police officers that were shot, and one killed, last week. It was a tragic incident, but unfortunately, it comes with the job. My question is this: How are 2 White dudes "undercover" over on Taylor, a block North of Delmar. They stand out like sore thumbs! Everybody should have known they were the "po-po". . .

How many of yall voted in the Tuesday Primary? That's a damn shame, not many at all. I guess folks just don't get 'hype' over voting for things that don't really matter (do they?). It's starting to look like John Kerry, the senator from Massachusetts, is going to be "the man". He seems to have that Presidential "look" you keep hearing so much about. What does that say about Al Sharpeton's "look"? And no, I didn't vote either (I know, I'm a damn shame too) . . .

It's funny how we're starting to hear more and more about how Bush 'nem knew there wasn't any evidence that Iraq had Weapons of Mass Destruction. None. They keep trying to deflect the blame by say that the 'intelligence' let them down. Elephant sh*t! I've seen numerous interviews over the last couple of weeks of top-level government employees who told the administration that all their so-called evidence was bogus, but the administration proceeded with their plans anyway. America wake-up! In several months we have the opportunity to elect another leader for our country. Do you really want to support someone who defies global opinion, purpously mis-leads the nation and sends hundreds of American soldiers halfway around the world to die - just because he wants to? People keep saying, "It's all about the oil". So what. Even if it is, America will NEVER control it. Every other Muslim country in that region will see to that. I apologize for my rantings, but this topic always ticks me off . . .

On a lighter, browner more decorative note - Janet's tiddie (do you spell tiddie with 2 d's or 2 t's? I've seen it spelled both ways, so well, whatever). How does 1.5 seconds of 1breast get so much attention? You got CBS apologizing, the NFL apologizing, MTV, Justin, Janet and everybody apologizing! Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that what she did was appropriate, but didn't CBS air the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 2002? I remember that. And this whole thing about the Super Bowl being a family show is ridiculous! This is the one game where parents try to get rid of their kids so they can drink more. This thing would have blown over much quicker if the media hadn't made such a big deal out of it. The biggest tragedy is that the other tiddie has totally been ignored and left out. How do you think it feels? (not literally.) . . . - you've been delivered.

Ladies, if you have any questions about the human male species that you desperately need answered, or you just wanna know why men act the way they do, drop me a line, I'll clear everything up for you. Until next time...

Single in St. Louis
by Imani Singleton 3/23

Settled In My Comfort Zone

IÕve been single a long time and IÕve grown into myself. What I mean by that is that I have a routine. I get up at 5:00 A.M., go to the gym, shower, go to work, come home make a small dinner, climb in the bed and watch prime-time T.V., read for about ten or fifteen minutes, go to sleep. On Friday nights I go out with my girlsÉ you get the point.

Well, dating just doesnÕt seem to fit at this time. Actually, itÕs more of a nuisance than a romantic experience. I really feel put upon when a guy wants to take me out, especially to dinner. Dinner is such an intimate setting. Dinner tends to be overwhelming when you are first getting to know someone. One on one, what if the conversation is not good, no way out, what if the food is bad, you could be stuck there indefinitely. It could turn out to be okay or even fun, but É

IÕm comfortable with my life right now. IÕve worked to get to the place where IÕm perfectly at ease with who I have become, and it has not been an effortless path to get to this point. IÕve had to work hard to be okay with going to the movies alone, or to lunch alone or even to the mall alone without feeling lonely. I like companionship and right now IÕm choosing my own companionship to that of the coveted single black man.

Connection, Not Control

A mantra, a prayer often said by this security consultant is, "Thank you for making me a protective spirit." From this wellspring of gratitude flows dreams literally fulfilled, friends the quality of boyhood adventure heroes and actual income from SWS, my security consulting (sub) micro-business. Protective spirituality is an attempt to emulate the supreme security of our Creator and my parent's lovingly selective version.

Since September 11th, an arguably repressive brand of "security" has chokeheld the body politic and less restrictive safety would be appreciated. The theme of an earlier pre-SWS slogan, " YOUR safety is MY happiness!!", assigned its focus to the other person. Its foundation was connection, not control. In the government safety arena, possibly well-intentioned excesses like airport searches without explaination or police roadblocks harassing law abiding citizens cannot trump the type of respect-driven safety policy embodied by that phrase and the style of security coordination that birthed it.

Generally, Protective Spirituality attempts to connect with the "other" in the safety encounter, whether that person is a client or even a potential adversary. "Connection not control" is the key to providing truly effective safety. Special event security planning and supervison is a dynamic situation where alcohol, crowds and energy can collide with disturbing consequences. Patrons encountering kind greetings, jokes and restraint are far less likely to escalate a matter than those treated disresppectfully. Misguided machismo on the part of security professionals, public and private, actually endangers those they are protecting. From this oxymoron any number of lawsuits and avoidable suffering has occured. Limiting laws, rude regulations and other official misconduct will never surpass the successful serenity offered by Protective Spirituality.

YOUR safety truly is my happiness. Anything less is not real.

Destruction of African American Heritage Stamps

Thurgood Marshall, Roy Wilkins, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston and Patricia Roberts Harris are all on stamps. Please buy a book of our stamps ASAP. The Post Office will DESTROY all remaining African American Heritage stamps at the end of the month instead of following their usual procedure of selling them until they are depleted. Why? Because we're not buying them! However, our postal workers are asking patrons to complain to the Post Master, via a complaint form. Please ask for and complete the form (at the post office).

Skip the love, flag, rose or teddy-bear stamps that they offer you automatically, request African-American stamps every time. If we don't buy them, nobody will. We need to keep the little things that we do get. BLACK STAMPS in circulation!!!!
